Ukiyo-e – “pictures of the floating world” – is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings that date back to the Edo period (1600–1867). The floral kimono print that inspired Paperblanks Botan journal cover was created by art publishers for Japanese theatre companies in the early 1900s. The details of these Ukiyo-e kimono patterns continue to influence contemporary garment design trends.
